18 Motorists Ticketed for Speeding Friday 4th June

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Roads Policing Unit (RPU), along with parish patrol officers, continue to address traffic offences as well as other incidents.
On Friday 4th June, RPU officers issued a total of 12 speeding tickets to motorists between 8am and 9am in the eastern parishes – specifically in the Harrington Sound Road Smith’s parish / Hamilton parish area and the Kindley Field Road, St. George’s area.
Also on Friday, patrol officers in the western parishes issued six speeding tickets to motorists during the day in the South Road, Camp Road Warwick area.
As has been said many times before, appropriate enforcement is just one part of any effective strategy to deal with road safety issues.
All road users also have an important role to play in protecting their own safety, as well as the safety of others, when travelling around the island.

A car driver, said to be a 24-year-old Hamilton parish woman, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving Sunday night after a collision involving four other cars in the City of Hamilton.
Thankfully, no one was hurt. However, all five vehicles were damaged.
The crash occurred around 8:55pm Sunday, 6th June at the junction of Burnaby Street and Reid Street.
Apparently the 24-year-old woman was driving a grey Suzuki Swift car along Burnaby Street when she failed to stop at the marked stop sign at the junction and collided with another car (a blue BMW) being driven along Reid Street. The driver of the BMW, said to be a 27-year-old Pembroke woman, was not hurt.
Reports also indicate that three additional cars that were parked and unoccupied along Burnaby Street at the time, were caught up in the aftermath of the initial crash – with one of the three parked vehicles pushed on to the sidewalk and into the outer wall of Butterfield Bank.
Inquiries continue and a court appearance is anticipated in due course.
BPS Vetting Office Re-Opens for In-Person Service

The Bermuda Police Service, (BPS), is pleased to announce that, as of today, Monday 7-June-2021, our Criminal Records / Vetting Office shall be open to in-person service where members of the public can enquire and receive help with criminal records queries and vetting applications including Criminal Records Checks. Opening hours are Mon-Fri 9:00am to 4:00pm (closed 1:00pm – 2:15pm). Do be reminded that current Covid safety protocols must be adhered to including mask wearing when entering the office, hand sanitizer use and physical distancing.

Calvin Smith Retires from the BPS After Over 42 Years of Public Service

Earlier this week, at 5pm Monday 31st May, Staff Officer Calvin Smith officially retired from the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) after over 42 years of public service – 
which saw him receive the Overseas Territories Police Medal in 2016.
Calvin (known by many as Cal) Smith joined the BPS in 1984, having already served with the Bermuda Regiment. He has worked in nearly every area of the Service; has an extensive investigative background in the Criminal Investigation Department and the Serious Crime Unit, and has received 14 Commissioner’s Commendations for his detective work. He served for five years as the Head of Special Branch and was the Government Security Officer until 2008. He then served as the Tasking Manager in the Intelligence Division and has attended several courses both locally & overseas.
During his career Cal also received two Commissioner’s Merit Awards, one Bermuda Reserve Police Merit Award, 30 Letters of Good Work, the Bermuda Police Service Long Service Award (18 years), several trophies and certificates for both local and overseas sports tournaments as well as the 2007/2008 Bermuda Police Service Officer of the Year Award and the 2009 AKA Man of the Year Award. In addition, he is still involved with the Police Week Committee (starting from 2007, to date). In 2018, Cal was voted President of the BPS Ex-Police Officers’ Association and remains in that post.
Cal reached the rank of Chief Inspector and started his tenure as the Commissioner’s Staff Officer in March 2016, as a Chief Inspector. He served as Staff Officer until 31st May 2021, assisting both former Commissioner Michael DeSilva and current Commissioner Stephen Corbishley, before retiring from the police. Including his service with the Bermuda Regiment from 1979, Cal’s total service to the people of Bermuda is over 42 years.
Stolen Motorcycle Recovered, Two Suspects Arrested After Police Pursuit

A stolen motorcycle was recovered Wednesday night (2nd June) and two suspects – said to be an 18-year-old Smith’s parish woman and a 19-year-old Devonshire woman – were arrested in connection with the matter.
Around 9:15pm Wednesday, a police unit that was stationary on Front Street in the City of Hamilton observed the two suspects travelling east along Front Street on a motorcycle. The rider failed to stop for a red light at the junction of Front Street and Burnaby Street.
Apparently despite using the police vehicle’s lights and sirens, the rider led police on a pursuit, which ended in the Ferrars Lane, Pembroke area where both young women were detained. The motorcycle they were riding on was later confirmed to be stolen and as a result, it was impounded by police.
Fifth Road Fatality for 2021: 16-Year-Old Amber Bridges

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 16-year-old Amber Bridges, Bermuda’s fifth road fatality for 2021.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Amber’s family and friends at this tragic time.
It now appears that Amber was riding her 50cc scooter east along South Road in Southampton – and a van, driven by a 57-year-old Sandys parish man was travelling in the opposite direction – when the vehicles collided as they attempted to negotiate a series of bends nearest to Cross Bay Road (in the vicinity of the Fairmont Southampton golf course), around 12:15pm Sunday, 30th May.
Amber was seriously injured and despite lifesaving efforts by emergency medical technicians (EMTs) at the scene, which continued as she was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, the St. George’s teen was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
A BPS Family Liaison Officer is providing ongoing support to Amber’s loved ones.
The van driver was not hurt.
Fifth Road Fatality for 2021 [Updated]

A 16-year-old St. George’s girl seriously hurt after a collision occurred involving the 50cc scooter she was riding (apparently headed east) and a van (apparently being driven west) along South Road in Southampton, near Dolphin Ridge, around 12:15pm today (Sunday, 30th May) sadly later succumbed to her injuries at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) extends sincere condolences to the 16-year-old girl’s family and friends. A BPS Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support her loved ones.
This marks the fifth road fatality for 2021. Formal identification is anticipated on Monday, 31st May.
Traffic diversions were in effect for approximately three hours while a Traffic Collision Investigator and the Forensic Support Unit processed the scene.
Reported Serious Two Vehicle Collision on South Road in Southampton [Updated]

Around 12:15pm today (Sunday, 30th May) police and other first responders were dispatched to a reported serious two vehicle collision on South Road in Southampton, near the junction with Dolphin Ridge.
Details are limited at this time. However, early information suggests that a van and a 50cc scooter were involved.
The rider of the scooter, believed to be a 16-year-old girl, was seriously hurt.
She was given CPR at the scene which continued as she was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. An update on her condition is anticipated in due course.
The driver of the van was not injured.
Traffic delays in the area are to be expected as police process the scene.
25-Year-Old Man Stabbed at Horseshoe Bay on Bermuda Day

Around 7:15pm Friday, 28th May (Bermuda Day) police officers responded to a reported disturbance at Horseshoe Bay in Southampton.
Approximately 15 minutes later, police officers also responded to a reported disturbance at Chaplin Bay in Warwick.
However, on arrival at both locations, nothing untoward was encountered.
Detectives later learned that a 25-year-old man, who had been at Horseshoe Bay beach earlier Friday evening, attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of a stab wound to his abdomen.
At last check the injury was not considered life threatening and the young man was listed in stable condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Bermuda Day Holiday Weekend Policing

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) takes this opportunity to advise the public on matters related to ensuring a peaceful and safe time for everyone during this year’s Bermuda Day holiday weekend.
Acting Superintendent Tracy Adams – “I would like to share the general policing plan with the community, which involves visible BPS patrols during the Bermuda Day holiday weekend (Friday, 28th May through Sunday, 30th May), and reassure residents that any acts of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
However, if you see something, say something. Please call 211, the main police telephone number 295-0011 or 911 in an emergency.
Police patrols will also be vigilant regarding compliance by members of the public and businesses to current COVID-19 protocols.
