Update & Ongoing Witness Appeal: Darrell’s Wharf Shooting

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) can confirm that a 56-year-old man who was shot multiple times during a firearms incident which occurred around 7:30pm on Wednesday 16th June at Darrell’s Wharf in Warwick, has now been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit, to a general ward at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
As the investigation into this brazen daylight attack continues, detectives are renewing their appeal for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects, who escaped on a motorcycle.

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell (Officer in Charge, Tactical Support Division) – “Despite an ongoing focus on traffic offences by the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) which saw more than 70 tickets issued over the National Heroes’ Day holiday weekend, a total of 16 collisions occurred during the same timeframe, ranging in severity from relatively minor to potentially life threatening. All 16 are under active investigation. It would appear that inattention and driving without due care were factors in most of these incidents.
To emphasise the continued efforts of the BPS, from Friday, 18th June through Monday, 21st June at least 77 tickets were issued for traffic offences, along with 24 motorist advice notices (official warnings). Of note, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) handed out 57 speeding tickets during the period – as well as tickets for no driver’s licence, driving while disqualified and driving without due care. Road sobriety checkpoints were also in effect. However, only one person was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving as a result.
In addition, police officers responding to regular calls for service during this past holiday weekend issued another 20 traffic tickets for offences including speeding; disobeying a traffic sign; no driver’s licence; driving while disqualified; illegally towing a vehicle; permitting an unlicensed vehicle to be driven and driving without due care.

National Heroes' Day Holiday Weekend Policing Plan

This holiday weekend, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) will continue to work with our partner agencies in the Royal Bermuda Regiment and the Bermuda Reserve Police on enforcement of the COVID-19 regulations.
Additionally we are working alongside the Dept of Environmental Health on COVID compliance matters, to include visits to various businesses and restaurants to ensure that patrons and establishments, do not let down their guard on engaging in the appropriate health and safety guidelines.
Martin Weekes, Assistant Commissioner of Police said: “As part of our efforts to help make this holiday weekend enjoyable, the Police Service alongside our Reserve colleagues, will be actively engaged in keeping our roads safe by conducting speed checks and road sobriety checkpoints.
On the water, the BPS will be providing extra resources to support and work alongside the officers of the Bermuda Coastguard to bolster their marine policing response this holiday weekend and to monitor COVID compliance as well as to deter anti-social behavior on the water.

Thank you for your time. I would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief update on the shooting, which occurred yesterday at 7:30pm at Darrell’s Wharf in Warwick. A 56-year-old man was shot multiple times in broad daylight, sustaining potentially life-threatening injuries. He remains at the hospital in the Intensive Care Unit, with his family at his side. The suspects were on a motorcycle.
BPS Traffic Offences Enforcement Continues: Violators Appear in Court

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) continues to conduct appropriate enforcement regarding traffic offences island wide, through the efforts of the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) and parish patrol officers. Currently 70 to 100 tickets are being issued per week.
From Friday morning (11th June) until Monday morning (14th June), 51 speeding tickets were issued, with 23 motorist advice notices handed out for other traffic offences. Motorist advice notices are not tickets, but official warnings given to road users. So far this week Monday (14th June) and Tuesday (15th June), a total of 6 individuals have appeared in Magistrates’ Court for the following traffic offences:
BPS Investigating Another Raft Up Due to Video on Social Media

The Bermuda Police Service, (BPS), is aware of a video clip circulating on social media, showing a raft up with several individuals in attendance.
A Bermuda Coastguard crew on patrol attended the scene.
The event was shut down and the vessels involved dispersed.
The Coastguard team took further action to ensure the boats did not move to another location and the activity resumed.
The identities of individuals involved were recorded.
The Coastguard is now collaborating with the BPS to prepare a file to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which will make a determination on any possible further action.
The BPS investigation into a similar event hosted by U.S. clothing line Revolve, is progressing apace and we would like to thank those individuals who have so far come forward to assist.
The public is reminded that under the current COVID regulations, raft ups are not permitted at any time.
Motorcyclist Hospitalised After Collision in Southampton

Shortly after 9pm Friday 11th June, 2021, police and first responders attended a collision on South Road, between Horseshoe Road and Southampton Princess entrance.
Details at this time are very limited. However, early information suggests at least four motorcycles were traveling west, when one rider caused another to lose control of their vehicle and crash.
The other motorcycles left the scene, leaving behind a 25 year old Warwick man, who is currently receiving treatment at KEMH for serious injuries. His condition at this time, is listed as stable.
It is not known if any of the other persons involved were injured.
Sudden Death of 54 Year Old Man in Hamilton Parish

The Bermuda Police Service is investigating the sudden death of a 54 year old male, following an incident at a Hamilton Parish residence earlier today.
Police and other first responders were dispatched to a residence at My Lords Bay Lane around 2:45 p.m. today, Friday 11th June after receiving reports of a domestic dispute at that location.
The victim reportedly lost consciousness and was attended to at the scene by emergency staff. He was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead some time later.
Investigation Into REVOLVE Boating Event

As part of the police investigation into the REVOLVE boating event which took place on Tuesday of this week, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is requesting that anyone who may have video recorded the event, to please get in contact with Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell, Officer in Charge, Police Tactical Support Division on 717-0828, the main police number 295-0011 or, via email: rcardwell@bps.bm.
The BPS is aware of the numerous video clips and photographs of the event being circulated on social media and while these may assist with the ongoing investigation into the matter, they cannot be submitted as evidence before a court of law.
21-Year-Old Motorcyclist Hospitalised After Sandys Parish Collision

Around 3:20pm today (Wednesday, 9th June) police and fellow first responders were dispatched to a reported serious collision at the junction of Somerset Road and Sound View Road in Sandys parish.
It now appears that a 21-year-old Sandys parish man was riding a motorcycle south on Somerset Road and a 75-year-old Sandys parish man was driving a car out of Sound View Road – attempting to make a right turn on to Somerset Road – when the collision occurred.
The motorcyclist apparently sustained head injuries as well as a fractured collar bone and was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment, where he is currently in stable condition.
The car driver was not hurt.
Despite the best efforts of Roads Policing Unit officers assisting with traffic diversions while the collision scene was processed, delays were experienced by motorists travelling to and from the Somerset area, until inquiries by the Traffic Collision Investigator and Forensic Support Unit were completed.
