The Bermuda Police Service reports that the Alco-analyser machines are now back in operation. Technical problems have been resolved at the Government Laboratory that had halted production of the solution needed to calibrate the Alco-analyser machines. The machines were offline for a period of approximately two weeks. As reported, the absence of the machines did not prevent the police from reporting drivers for impaired driving offences and using other evidence to support the charges.
Chief Inspector Simon Groves - Good Morning. Bermuda recognizes its national day this Friday, 24th of May. As you know
http://www.bermudapolice.bm/system/files/2013%20Press%20Conference%20Pol... " border="0" />this is a day of celebrations and traditional events which attract significant participation and support. The vast majority of Bermuda's people want to enjoy this day and what it represents and the Bermuda Police Service will be deployed in significant numbers to support those activities.
Our intent, and that of our community partners, is to provide safety and support to allow the peaceful enjoyment of the day. The Sinclair Packwood Memorial cycle race will start at 8:50am in Somerset, and will be followed shortly thereafter by the Half Marathon Derby, which will commence at 9am.
The route for both races will remain the same as in previous years. It is important that those watching the races from the roadside stay off the road and do not obstruct the participants in the race.
Around 11:30am on Monday, May 20th police and first responders attended a reported collision on Mission Road in Paget involving a motorcycle and a truck.
The motorcyclist, a 25 year old Paget man, was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of apparently serious leg injuries. At last check the victim was in stable condition at the hospital.
At approximately 4:10am this morning (Thursday May 16th), police responded to a report of a road traffic collision along Harbour Road in Paget, in the area of the Lower Ferry Dock. It appears that the driver of a car struck a stone wall resulting in the vehicle landing in the water. The male driver escaped unharmed and an investigation into the collision has commenced.
There is a significant portion of the wall that is missing and Works and Engineering staff are due to put up temporary barriers in the area in short order. In the meantime, motorists are asked to use caution as they drive and ride through the area.
Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - I am pleased to present the 2013/14 Annual Policing Plan for the Bermuda
Police Service (BPS). This is the second of three plans under our three-year Strategic Plan for 2012 to 2015. The plan is aligned with the financial year 1st April 2013 to 31st March 2014 so that available funding and operational priorities are considered together. It has been prepared in consultation with His Excellency the Governor and the Minister for Public Safety. The final document represents the shared aims across the community for the police to deliver a high quality of service that is focused on people and aimed at safety.
Our operational priorities remain the same as the last three years: we are focused on those crimes that are of most concern to the community and that cause the greatest harm: guns, gangs, drugs and violence.
Our work this year will not only be aimed at “Making Bermuda Safer,” but making Bermuda feel safer as well.
