Inquiries Underway Into Two Separate Incidents of Reported Theft

Stolen Motorcycle
Around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 2nd April 2024, police received a report of a motorcycle theft on Middle Road, Sandys.
Apparently a female resident was travelling east along Middle Road when her helmet fell off.
She parked the bike in the bus layby along Middle Road near the junction with George’s Bay Road, Sandys and went to retrieve her helmet.
As she did so, an unknown male who was standing in the bus layby, proceeded to get onto the motorcycle and rode off in a westerly direction.
The suspect is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, dark complexioned, wearing all black clothing and a black helmet. The stolen motorcycle is said to be a black Sym HD 125 with licence plate CN448.
Visitors’ Handbag Stolen
Shortly after 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, 2nd April 2024, police received a report of a theft from a rental auxiliary cycle.
A visiting Canadian national told police that while travelling along Somerset Road in Sandys with another Canadian visitor pillion passenger, an unknown black motorcycle with two persons wearing dark visors, bumped the back of their rental scooter.
The suspects then removed a black and purple knapsack from the basket, containing a quantity of cash and electronic devices and escaped.
Enquiries into both incidents are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the main police number, 295-0011.

Easter Holiday Policing

The Bermuda Police Service, (BPS) wish to take this opportunity to thank the public, for working with us to prevent any major incidents over the Easter holiday period.
There were numerous social events spread across the island and these took place without any incidents reported, or calls for police assistance to deal with any untoward situations or incidents of anti-social behaviour.
Still, there were a number of arrests made for various offences.
Troublingly, despite publicly highlighting via a press conference as well as social media along with traditional media, that there would be a heightened police presence across the island, including roadside sobriety checkpoints over the holiday weekend, 158 tickets were issued for traffic offences.
Of that figure, 117 were for speeding offences, with motorists clocked at speeds ranging from 60 KMH to 80 KMH. The other offences included no driver’s license, unlicensed and uninsured vehicle, illegal tint, disobeying traffic signs and use of cell phone while driving.
Troublingly, there were seven people arrested for driving while impaired.
The highest breathalyser reading recorded was 202.3 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. That’s more than twice the legal limit of 80 milligrams/100 millilitres.
ATTEMPTED ROBBERY:
Shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024, police attended the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in response to a report of a male that showed up seeking treatment for a knife wounds to his hand.
Investigations revealed the victim was walking to his car, which was parked on Angle Street, Pembroke, when he was allegedly approached by three unknown males, dressed in all black and traveling on two dark coloured motorcycles.
They allegedly demanded a chain he wore around his neck but he refused. A struggle reportedly ensued during which the male sustained lacerations to his hand.
No property was taken.
The suspects then rode off along Angle Street, onto Union Street and made good their escape.
TAKING VEHICLE WITHOUT OWNER’S CONSENT (TWOC):
On Sunday, March 31st, 2024, police received a report that three individuals dressed in all black clothing, black helmets, black gloves and wearing masks were in the area of Tamarind Vale Warwick, attempting to steal a motorcycle.
The individuals were approached by a member of the public and fled. Two on a motorcycle and one on foot. The suspects on the motorcycle dropped the bike but still managed to make good their escape.
Officers responded to the area and saw a male fitting the description of the suspects. Unable to give an account as to why he was in the area, he was arrested on suspicion of TWOC. He was taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.
The bike dropped by the two other suspects, was subsequently recovered by officers. Checks revealed that it had been previously reported stolen.
VEHICLE FIRE:
Around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, police and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) personnel attended a report of a vehicle on fire on The Glebe Road, Pembroke.
On arrival, officers found a light truck engulfed. The fire was extinguished by BFRS.
Subsequent inquiries led to suspicions the fire was maliciously set.
BLADED ARTICLE ARREST:
Just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, police received a report that a male was waving a knife and threatening people in the area of Dundonald Street, Pembroke.
Officers on patrol located a male fitting the description of the subject on Victoria Street, near the Hamilton Police Station.
Officers engaged the subject who dropped a bag he had in his possession and ran off.
After a brief foot pursuit, the subject was apprehended at the intersection of Church Street/Court Street.
He was arrested for possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Drowning Incident at Horseshoe Bay

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 27 March 2024, police received a report of persons in difficulty in the water at Horseshoe Bay.
Police, Emergency Medical Services and Coastguard personnel were dispatched to scene.
Upon arrival, officers established there were three persons, all visitors to the island, requiring assistance.
Information provided indicates a child got into difficulty while in the water and a male went to her assistance.
However, he too got into difficulty and became in need of help.
A woman then entered the water and was able to get both the child and the male out.
Life-saving efforts commenced immediately once the male who was unresponsive was out of the water.
He was transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH), where sadly, he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The young child was alert. She was taken in another ambulance to KEMH for medical assessment.
There will be no further information provided at this time.
Motorcyclist Hospitalised After Collision With Car in the City of Hamilton

Around 5:10pm on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, police and other first responders were dispatched to a reported two vehicle collision involving a car and a bike on Par-La-Ville Road at the junction with Church Street, in the City of Hamilton.
Initial information suggests that a car, which was negotiating a right hand turn from Par-La-Ville Road onto Richmond Road, became involved in a collision with a motorcyclist who was reportedly overtaking the line of traffic.
The driver of the car was not reported to be injured.
However, the male motorcyclist has been transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of potentially serious injuries.
Police are diverting traffic at the scene and traffic delays are to be expected.
West Park Lane Firearms Incident Witness Appeal: No Reported Injuries

Around 11:10 pm on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, police received reports of multiple gunshots heard in the area of West Park Lane, Pembroke.
Units were dispatched to the location to carry out checks.
It was reported that a bullet was found inside a residence in the area of Ingham Vale, Pembroke.
Officers of the Forensic Support Unit attended and processed the scene.

Motorcyclist Seriously Hurt in Hamilton Parish Collision [Updated]

There has been a serious road traffic collision on the North Shore Road, just west of Francis Patton Primary School, Hamilton Parish.
Details are limited at this time, but the incident involved a motorcycle and a car.
The roadway is now blocked while the scene is processed by Traffic Collision Investigators.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Radnor Road onto North Shore Road then, onto Harrington Sound Road.
Westbound traffic is being diverted onto Fractious Street at the junction with North Shore Road then, onto Wilkinson Avenue.
It is anticipated the roadway will remain closed for an extended period.
Update: Sunday, 17th March - Around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday March 16, 2024, police and first responders were dispatched to a serious road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a motorcar on North Shore road Hamilton Parish.
Reports are, a male motorcyclist was traveling east on North Shore Road when he attempted to overtake a line of traffic.
He collided with a motorcar just west of the Francis Patton Primary School and was ejected from the bike into the roadway.
He sustained multiple serious injuries and was left unconscious.
Upon arrival at the scene police officers immediately commenced life saving procedures until Emergency Medical Services attended.
The motorcyclist was immediately transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment for his injuries.
At last check, he was listed in critical condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
The motorcar driver was not hurt but was left visibly shaken by the incident.
The roadway remained closed for approximately three hours while the scene was processed by Traffic Collision Investigators.

Three Officers Promoted to the Rank of Chief Inspector

Darrin Simons, Commissioner of Police today had the honour of promoting Inspectors Derricka Burns, Jason Smith, and Dorian Astwood (pictured right), to the
rank of Chief inspector with the Bermuda Police Service, (BPS).
Ms. Burns, Mr. Smith and Mr. Astwood all joined the service via the Police Cadet Programme. The three of them combined, have contributed 93 years of service to Bermuda and her people.
Commissioner Simons in announcing the promotions said of the officers, “Their dedication and leadership have been instrumental in our success, and this promotion is a testament to their hard work and commitment to excellence.”
“I wholeheartedly congratulate our three of our new Chief Inspectors and confidently look forward to the continued growth their leadership will bring. Let's all rally behind them, offering our unwavering support as we embrace this exciting new chapter in our journey to make Bermuda safer.”

Witness Appeal: Taxi & Motorcycle Collide in Hamilton Parish [Updated]

There has been a serious road traffic collision near the entrance to Crystal Caves on Wilkinson Avenue, Hamilton Parish.
Details are limited at this time although it is understood the collision involved a motorcycle and a taxi.
The scene is currently being processed and it is anticipated the roadway will be closed for some time.
Traffic headed west is being directed along North Shore Road, while motorists headed east, are advised to use Fractious Street to get to North Shore Road and then continue east.
Update: Shortly before 1:15 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024, police and other first responders were dispatched to a two vehicle collision involving a motorcycle and an airport taxi, on Wilkinson Avenue near the northern entrance to the Crystal Caves property in Hamilton Parish.
Reports suggest the motorcycle rider, a 19-year-old male, was traveling south along Wilkinson Avenue, when he attempted to overtake a PTB bus.
As he attempted the manoeuvre, he reportedly came into contact with the airport taxi which was traveling in the opposite direction.
The motorcycle rider was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the roadway.
He sustained a serious head injury and was in and out of consciousness at the scene. He also suffered a broken leg and facial injuries.
He was attended to by EMTs before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where at last check he continued to receive treatment for his injuries.
The 33-year-old male taxi driver was not reported to be injured.
The taxi was left with moderate damage, however, the motorcycle is a write-off.
The roadway remained closed for approximately three and a half hours as traffic collision investigators processed the scene. We wish to thank the motoring public for their patience and co-operation during this exercise.

Single Vehicle Car Collision on St. David’s Road Thursday Afternoon

Around 12:30pm Thursday, 14th March 2024, a reported single vehicle collision occurred on St. David’s Road in St. George’s, in the vicinity of Stocks Road.
Early information indicates that a car driven by a 66-year-old St. George’s woman went off the road, at the corner near Stocks Harbour.
The incident happened in front of a police officer driving in the area, who immediately stopped his vehicle and entered the water to render assistance until the arrival of Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BF&RS) personnel.
Apparently the female driver was not seriously hurt and was treated for a hand injury at the scene by BF&RS emergency medical technicians.
At last check, arrangements were being made to have the damaged car removed from the shoreline.
Once again, motorists travelling through this area of St. David’s Road are reminded to use caution, particularly when the roads are wet.
