Centre for Justice Forum: Stop & Search Powers

On Wednesday, November 30th 2011 the Centre for Justice held a forum on police stop & search powers at St. Paul's Centennial Hall in Pembroke from 6 - 8pm. Panelists that discussed the topic were: the Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief, Acting Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman, lawyers Mr. Peter Martin and Mr. Larry Mussenden, CURB (Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda) Chairman Mr. Cordell Riley and Mr. Carlton Simmons from Youth on the Move. Driver Arrested After Car Collides With 4 Year Old Girl

A 68 year old Smith’s parish woman has been arrested after the car she was driving collided with a pedestrian in the Frog Lane, Devonshire area around 6pm on Thursday December 1st. In addition, the vehicle involved has been impounded by police.

The victim, a four year old Southampton girl was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for relatively minor injuries and later released. Inquiries into this matter are ongoing.

Road Closure

On Sunday December 4th, the Ministry of Public Works will be closing the out bound lane of Crow Lane to traffic in order to carry out paving works. This will affect the areas between Spurling Hill and Lane Hill exiting the City of Hamilton from 7am – 7pm. Upon completion of the paving and road markings, the road will be re-opened.

Acting Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman - In relation to the allegations being leveled in today’s Royal Gazette (Wednesday, November 30th edition), the Bermuda Police Service has not received any reports from members of the public about being approached by females offering sexual favours. Our police officers regularly and proactively patrol in the areas where there is night time economy, in particular throughout the Front Street area.

Eighth Road Fatality For 2011

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 41 year old Alexander Monk of Hamilton parish. Around 7:15am on Thursday November 24th, Mr. Monk was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a bus on Middle Road in Southampton in the vicinity of Five Star Island. Mr. Monk sustained head injuries and was transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead by an on call physician.

Christmas Parade Traffic Advisory

The annual Christmas Parade will take place on Sunday 27th November 2011 from 5pm until approximately 8pm in the City of Hamilton. The parade will proceed along the following route:

From Par-La-Ville Road car park, exiting left onto Church Street, left onto Par-La-Ville Road, along Par-La-Ville Road to Front Street, left onto Front Street, then left onto Court Street and left along Church Street.

Shooting in Southampton, No Injuries Reported

Around 11pm on Saturday, November 26th police responded to a report of gunshots in the Railway Trail, Southampton area. Forensic evidence found suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

Motorcycle & Truck Collide Near Paget Traffic Lights

Around 3pm on Friday, November 25th police and first responders attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury near the junction of Middle Road and South Road in Paget involving a motorcycle and a truck. It appears that both vehicles were traveling along South Road when they collided in the vicinity of the Paget traffic lights. The rider of the motorcycle, a 21 year old Warwick man, sustained arm and leg injuries and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. His injuries are not considered life threatening. The driver of the truck, a 52 year old Devonshire man, was not injured. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

Update: Bus Collides With Utility Pole, No Injuries Reported

Around 3:30pm Thursday, November 24th police responded to a report of a single vehicle damage only collision on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill involving a bus and a utility pole. There were no reported injuries. Traffic was diverted at the junction of North Shore Road and Barkers Hill, Devonshire as well as the junction of North Shore Road and Store Hill, Smith’s parish as a result. That section of road was subsequently re-opened. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

Traffic is being diverted at the junction of North Shore Road and Barkers Hill, Devonshire as well as the junction of North Shore Road and Store Hill, Smith’s parish as a result. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
