Fatal Motorcycle Collision in Hamilton Parish [Updated]

Around 1:55am on Sunday, July 20th first responders attended a reported serious single vehicle motorcycle collision on Harrington Sound Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with Cedarberry Drive.

It appears that a male motorcyclist collided with a roadside embankment and a stone pillar. He apparently succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Near Drowning Victim in Intensive Care

The victim of an apparent near drowning that occurred around 3:30pm Friday, July 18th at Admiralty House Park beach in Pembroke is now warded in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital and at last check was in stable condition.

The youngster, believed to be a nine year old local boy, was reportedly at the location as part of a summer programme.

Traffic Advisory: March to Government House

The Bermuda Police Service would like to advise the motoring public that highly visible police patrols will be on hand this afternoon to provide safety and security around a scheduled 5:30pm march to Government House.

The stated route is for the group to form up at St. John’s Church in Pembroke and proceed up Langton Hill entering Government House property at the main gate.

Ongoing Appeal: 2012 Disappearance & Murder of Mr. Rudolph (Rudy) Smith

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Dave Greenidge, Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - Wednesday 9th July 2014 marks the second anniversary of the disappearance and murder of Rudy Smith. Officers from the Serious Crime Unit, under the supervision of the Senior Investigating Officer Acting Detective Chief Inspector Greenidge, continue to investigate this matter.

There have been a number of media appeals and pleas for public assistance, both from the police and Rudy’s mother, Mrs. Madeline Rampersad which yielded some positive information.

Sixth Road Fatality for 2014: Jonathan Burch-DeCosta

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 20 year old Jonathan Burch-DeCosta.

Mr. Burch-DeCosta was initially warded in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a roadside wooden railing around 1:40am Sunday, June 29th along Somerset Road in Sandys parish, in the vicinity of Ely’s Harbour. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries at 7:50pm on Tuesday, July 1st.

Governor Presents 350 Donated Trauma Packs to BPS

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - I am pleased to accept the donation of 350 Trauma Packs on behalf of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS). This represents a key objective of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) that was set at our AGM held in Bermuda last year. At that meeting, the Commissioners were moved by the powerful story of St. Croix Chief of Police Christopher Howell who survived multiple gunshot wounds in 2012, thanks to a trauma pack that he was carrying.

Ongoing Witness Appeal: Darrell's Wharf Firearms Incident

Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Serious Crime Unit - Investigators continue to probe the shooting that took place at Darrells Wharf at about 7:55pm on Monday 16th June, 2014. Fortunately, there were no injuries or loss of life in this brazen attack.

Appeals for witnesses to this event have been marginally successful for persons coming forward to provide accounts of the incident. We are pleased that some people have been brave enough to come forward and assist in bringing these offenders to justice, however more information is being sought – especially from persons who were on the cruise or the dock at the time of the incident.

Confirmed Firearms Incident in Warwick: No Reported Injuries

Police responded to a report of a confirmed firearms incident that took place a few minutes after 8pm at Darrell's Wharf in Warwick. It appears that the tour boat Coral Princess was returning from an excursion (local patrons) when a motorcycle appeared with two men. The suspects fired at a jet ski that apparently was following the boat into the dock. No one was injured and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen two men leaving the scene on a motorcycle to contact police on 295-0011.

Deputy Commissioner Wright Awarded Overseas Territories Police Medal

The Bermuda Police Service congratulates Deputy Commissioner Paul Wright, who was awarded the Overseas Territories Police Medal (formerly the Colonial Police Medal) for Meritorious Service in the recently released 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Asked for his reaction on receiving such a prestigious award, Deputy Commissioner Wright responded: "Having worked alongside so may talented and dedicated colleagues in the Bermuda Police Service for almost 30 years, I feel very grateful indeed to receive the honour for my own contributions to making Bermuda safer."

Summer Water Safety

Good afternoon, I am Inspector Robert Cardwell.  I am here today to speak on behalf of the Marine Police Unit.

As we are now into the summer months, activities in and around the waters in Bermuda will increase. The Bermuda Police Service is committed to its mission of ‘making Bermuda safer’ and ensuring public safety and we will continue to work with our Service partners in the Bermuda Reserve Constabulary and Bermuda Regiment in concert with the Bermuda Water Safety Council through the summer season.
