Incorrect Information in January 7th 2009 Bermuda Sun Re: Speed Cameras

In today’s Bermuda Sun (January 7th, 2009) there was a very detailed article as it relates to speed cameras in Bermuda. Firstly, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) would like to make it abundantly clear that the clandestine Police source that was quoted in the Bermuda Sun does not speak on behalf of the organization and the details are not an accurate depiction of the issues surrounding the adoption of speed cameras on the island. The Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing is leading the project and the BPS is one of the collaborating partners. Speed cameras are being actively pursued as one of several initiatives to reduce traffic collisions and deaths on our roads. To suggest publicly that the speed camera issue is not being actively pursued and the government is dragging their heels is simply mischievous. The BPS disapproves of any Police officer who speaks to the media without complete knowledge of the subject at hand and who does not have the approval of the organization. We continue to encourage all media to come to an approved BPS source for information or at best give our organization the opportunity to respond.
