Update – Murder of Matthew Clarke

Sat, 2008-04-12

Detective Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels the officer in charge of Bermuda Police Service’s Serious Crime Unit reports that detectives are making steady progress into the unlawful killing of Matthew Clarke. Presently there are 3 men in Police custody; a 32 year old Southampton man, a 23 year old Pembroke man and a 17 year old Warwick man. A number of valuable witness statements have been recorded which have greatly assisted investigators in their efforts to resolve this tragic and unnecessary killing. Police are in the process of preparing a file of the evidence gathered to date for review by the Director of Public Prosecutions and his staff.

As the officer directly responsible for leading this murder investigation, I would like to use this opportunity to thank all of those persons who have come forward thus far and assisted officers in their pursuit of the perpetrators responsible for committing this violent and unnecessary act. As I have stated previously, the Bermuda Police Service’s capacity to deal with crime depends to a large extent upon its relationship with the community. In this particular case, it appears that the public have now become aware of the need for all citizens to assist in the war against crime with a view to making Bermuda a safer and more secure place in which to live.

Police are now making a further appeal for assistance and are particularly interested in speaking with any member(s) of the public who may have been in the area of North Shore Road, Pembroke or the north Hamilton area during the periods 11am – 3pm on Wednesday 9th April 2008, and saw 2 or 3 men inside of a blue coloured open-back truck. Anyone who has any information, whether they believe it to be significant or not, is asked to telephone 299-4315 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-623-8477.
