Thu, 2008-05-15

The Bermuda Police Service is aware of e-mails circulating around the island warning of an adult male allegedly interacting inappropriately with a group of school children. After the alleged incident, school officials strongly reminded all students not to interact with ‘strangers’ and informed all parents. On receiving word of this incident, Police officers contacted the school in question and a statement was later recorded from the Deputy Principal. An active investigation into the alleged incident is ongoing with a view to preparing a file for prosecution of any relevant offences by the DPP’s office. In addition, a Schools Resource Officer will be visiting the school to speak with teachers & students, advising them on what to do if they encounter a similar situation in the future.

‘Guardian’ Rescues Stranded Yacht

Around 12:40am today, Bermuda Radio received a mayday call from the sailing vessel ‘Vimana’ which was on its way to the island from St. Martin with two people onboard when the vessel’s steering failed 35 nautical miles south of Bermuda. Bermuda Radio contacted the Marine Police Unit and after a discussion about the situation, it was decided that the Police vessel ‘Guardian’ would assist in towing ‘Vimana’ to Bermuda at first light. At 6am ‘Guardian’ proceeded to the location of the ‘Vimana’ and subsequently took her in tow, arriving in St. George’s harbour at 12:30pm today without incident. The two individuals onboard the ‘Vimana’ (Swedish nationals) are uninjured and in good health.
