Hurricane Igor Update

Mon, 2010-09-20

From the EMO - There have been no reports of any deaths or major injuries as a result of Hurricane Igor; however there is reported property damage in various locations around the island with some trees down and debris in the road. Emergency services personnel are making their assessment of the damage at the moment and we would appeal for members of the public to please stay off the roads so they can carry out their jobs quickly and efficiently. Despite earlier appeals for people to stay indoors we continue to receive reports of members of the public driving around to have a look at the damage and this is hindering the ability of the emergency services to do their assessments.

The Causeway remains closed; it is being assessed and when it is ready to be re-opened, the public will be informed via the media and the Emergency Broadcast Radio Station 100.1FM.

The latest update from BELCO indicates that BELCO personnel are beginning damage assessment, restoration planning and power restoration. This is a demanding process that takes time and a lot of work. There are still 28,700 customers without power. There have also been many reports of broken poles, wires down and transformers down, affecting both high voltage and low voltage lines.

Damage assessment teams and work crews are being mobilized, while customer service representatives are also coming in. As BELCO get personnel out across the Island, they will begin to get a better picture of the state of their electricity distribution system.

We continue to urge residents to stay inside and wait until the emergency services have done their assessments and the weather has subsided as Bermuda is still under a tropical storm warning.

For further updates please tune into the Emergency Broadcast Radio Station at 100.1FM.
