Marine Advisory - In light of the stormy weather the island has been experiencing recently, the Bermuda Police Service Marine Unit would like to remind all boat owners of the following during the winter months. Hopefully these simple, proactive tips can help reduce damage and or loss of property.

  • Vessels should be checked on a regular basis.
  • Battery systems should be kept in good condition and fully charged to ensure proper operation of bilge pumps.
  • Any valuable items or gear should be removed from the vessel.
  • Moorings and bridles should be checked to ensure integrity and security of the attached vessel during winter storms and gales.
  • Ensure vessels are properly secured BEFORE any inclement weather. DO NOT do this during a storm putting yourself and others at risk.
  • If the owner is off the island someone responsible should be left in charge of checking the vessel whilst the owner is away.
  • Ensure the owner’s contact information is up to date with the Department of Marine & Ports, including any change in contact numbers.
  • Consider hauling the boat out of the water during the winter season if possible.
