Tue, 2009-10-27

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, October 19th – Monday, October 26th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 11
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 28
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 6
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 13
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Smith’s parish = 1, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 5, Paget = 2, Warwick = 1 and Southampton = 1.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 13 vehicles reported stolen, 4 were subsequently recovered.

Vehicle Fire

At 2:55pm on Monday, Police received a report of a vehicle fire at a Clay Court, Hamilton parish property. It appears that a member of the public discovered two cars on the property ablaze and alerted the authorities. Apparently both vehicles were extensively damaged as a result. Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel also attended the scene and extinguished the fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway; arson has not been ruled out. Any witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.

Halloween Advisory

Halloween is only a few days away and Police would like to remind grocery store operators about being vigilant regarding those purchasing large quantities of eggs – in particular, please be mindful of youth attempting to buy an excessive amount of eggs during the next few days. This will help to ensure that eggs do not fall into the wrong hands and become a nuisance to us all.

Media Note

The Bermuda Police Service will be holding a press conference regarding policing for Halloween on Thursday, October 29th at 1pm in the Police Media Relations office, Police Headquarters, Prospect Devonshire. All media are encouraged to attend.
