The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 21st – Monday, September 28th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 25
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 21
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 4
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 11
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Smith’s parish = 2, Pembroke = 4, Southampton = 2 and Sandys parish = 2.

Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 truck & 1 pedal cycle also reported stolen during the period. Of the 11 vehicles reported stolen, 4 were subsequently recovered.

Attempted Robbery

Around 12:20am today, Police received a report of an attempted robbery in the Sleepy Hollow Drive, Hamilton parish area. The complainant, a 63 year old St. George’s woman, stated that around 11:15pm on Monday she was driving her car along Rocky Lane when an unknown man jumped out of the bushes in front of her vehicle brandishing a bladed article and demanding money. She stopped the car and another three unknown men surrounded the vehicle, with two of those men also brandishing bladed articles. At this time a motorcycle rode into the area and the suspects made good their escape on foot. The St. George’s woman also took the opportunity to flee, escaping uninjured and with nothing taken from her. The main suspect was described as 5’11” tall of slim build while the other suspects were described as 5’6” – 5’9” tall. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident; in particular the motorcycle rider who rode through the Rocky Lane/Sleepy Hollow area around 11:15pm Monday. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Smith at the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 278-5105.

TWOC

Around 8:20am on Tuesday, September 22nd Police received a report of a vehicle taken without its owner’s consent. The ‘Correia Construction’ truck license # IN 2543 was removed sometime between 10pm Monday, September 21st and 7am Tuesday, September 22nd; it was parked outside Bone Fish Bar & Grill in Dockyard. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of ‘Correia Construction’ truck license # IN 2543 is encouraged to contact Police on 295-0011.

Burglary

At 11:15am on Monday (September 28th), Police received a report of a burglary at an Emily’s Bay Lane, St. George’s residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 8:30am and 11:10am that day, an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry into her home while it was unoccupied. The culprit(s) stole a Panasonic 32” flat screen TV, a black motorcycle license # BQ 470 and a Nintendo Wii video game system. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for anyone with any information on the whereabouts of a black motorcycle license # BQ 470 to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.

Police Week 2009

October 4th – October 10th

This year’s theme – Our Youth … Our Commitment; there are several community related events taking place during Police Week in keeping with our theme and we encourage all members of the public to come out and participate!

Sunday, October 4, 2009 – Church Service (10am start)

This non-denominational inter-faith church service at BUEI will be a spiritual experience where officers and the community can join together to give thanks.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 – Police Displays (11am Seniors Tea; 12 noon start)

The Bermuda Police Service puts its best on display for the public with various exhibits showcasing the various the various careers & opportunities available within the Service. To be held at Police Field, Prospect Devonshire.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 – Commissioner for a Day (9am – 2pm)

Primary & Middle School students selected as winners of the Police Week 2009 poster competition will be given the opportunity to see what it’s like to be Commissioner of Police for a day.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 – Beat the Retreat (9pm start)

Witness the pomp, pageantry & precision of the Bermuda Police Service as they march on Kings Square in St. George’s with the Bermuda Regiment Band & Corps of Drums as well as the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band. The Commissioner of Police and other dignitaries will be in attendance.

Saturday, October 10, 2009 – Police Ball (6:30pm cocktails; 7:30pm start)

A formal night celebrating 130 years of policing in Bermuda will be held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Resort. Tickets are $125.
