The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 7th – Monday, September 14th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 27
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 39
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 6
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 10
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Devonshire = 3, Pembroke = 2, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 2 and Sandys parish = 1.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 10 vehicles reported stolen, none were subsequently recovered.

Theft

Around 2:30pm on Monday, Police received a report of a theft. The complainants, two 50 year old American women, stated that around 1:30pm that day they parked their rental cycles at Church Bay in Southampton and went down to the beach. When the visitors returned to their rental cycles at 2:10pm however, they discovered an unknown culprit had gained entry into the compartment under the seat of both cycles. The culprit stole personal items. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Handbag Snatch

Around 12:10pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch at Pompano Beach Club. The complainants, a 66 year old American man and a 64 year old American woman who are visitors to the island, stated that around 12 noon that day they were playing tennis on the premises with their rental cycle parked nearby; in the cycle’s basket was a beach bag. While playing, the couple noticed two unknown men on a motorcycle ride up to their rental cycle and remove the beach bag. The suspects then made good their escape heading towards Middle Road. A subsequent search by the visitors located the beach bag in nearby bushes; all of their property was recovered except for a small quantity of cash. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.

At 11:55am on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch. The complainants, a visiting American couple, stated that around 11:30am that day they were riding their rental cycle along South Road in Southampton to Horseshoe Bay beach when two unknown men on a motorcycle sped past them and removed a black handbag from the rental cycle’s basket as they traveled down the hill leading to the beach. The suspects then made good their escape via the parking lot and through the Fairmont Southampton Princess property. The handbag contained a black Motorola cellular phone, an Olympus digital camera and personal items. The suspects are described as two black males wearing black helmets riding a black motorcycle. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.

Around 11am on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch. The complainants, a visiting American couple, stated that they were riding their rental cycle east along South Road in Smith’s parish near the junction with Harrington Hundreds Road when two unknown men on a motorcycle approached them from behind and snatched a knapsack from the rental cycle’s basket. The suspects then made good their escape via Harrington Hundreds Road. The black knapsack contained a quantity of cash and personal items. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that the three reported handbag snatch incidents may be linked.
