September 8 - Weekly Review

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, August 31st – Monday, September 7th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 26
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 33
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 10
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 23
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 4, Smith’s parish = 4, Devonshire = 3, Pembroke = 6, Paget = 1, Warwick = 2, Southampton = 3.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 van & 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 23 vehicles reported stolen, 3 were subsequently recovered, including the van.

Witness Appeal - Shooting at Hinson Lane

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the shooting that occurred around 1:35am Sunday at a Hinson Lane, Smith’s parish residence where a 62 year old Smith’s parish man was injured from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his body. He remains in critical condition at the hospital. Detectives are interested in speaking with anyone who was in the Middle Road, Devonshire area late Saturday early Sunday morning; particularly anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously. One of the men was approximately 5’9” tall while the other was noticeably shorter. Anyone who has any information, whether they believe it to be significant or not, are asked to contact detectives at the Serious Crime Unit at telephone number 299-8106 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477.

Disturbance

At 2:15 this morning, Police attended a reported disturbance at Southampton Rangers Sports Club. On arrival officers observed a crowd in the area; however, Police attempts to find out what may have happened were futile as no one wanted to provide any information. Officers maintained a visible presence in the area until the crowd dispersed. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Injury RTC

Around 3:50am on Sunday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Pitts Bay Road and Hidden Lane in Pembroke. It appears that a truck was traveling west on Pitts Bay Road when the driver, a 41 year old Pembroke man, lost control and collided with a wall. The Pembroke man was briefly trapped inside the vehicle before being extricated by Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of pain to his neck and left foot. The 41 year old Pembroke man was treated and released the same day. The truck was extensively damaged.

Around 1:45pm on Friday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with East Point Lane. It appears that a car was traveling east on North Shore Road when the driver, an 83 year old Hamilton parish woman, lost control and collided with a wall. The 83 year old woman sustained a bump to her head and complained of chest pains while her passengers, a 2 year old Hamilton parish boy and a 42 year old Hamilton parish woman, sustained a bump to the head and minor leg injuries respectively. All were taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment where the passengers were treated and released that day, while the driver remained for further medical assessment. The car was extensively damaged.

Weekend Activity

Over the Labour Day holiday weekend there were 6 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and 14 reported burglaries. There were also 18 reported damage only road traffic collisions, 13 reported road traffic collisions resulting in injury and 8 vehicles reported taken without their owners’ consent.
