The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, August 3rd - Monday August 10th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 20
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 46
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 4
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 21
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 10, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 5 and Sandys parish = 1.

Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 21 vehicles reported stolen, 3 were subsequently recovered.

Handbag Snatch

At 3pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch. It appears that between 11:30pm and 11:45pm on Sunday, a 24 year old Devonshire man and a 23 year old Paget woman were on an auxiliary cycle traveling south on Trimingham Road when an unknown individual on a dark green motorcycle rode alongside them and grabbed the female passenger’s brown handbag. The offender then made good their escape riding south on Trimingham Road. The victims were not injured. The handbag contained a Motorola cellular phone, a Canon digital camera, a quantity of cash and personal items.

A similar incident was reported to Police around 1:20am today, which occurred on Middle Road in Southampton near Camp Hill. It appears that the victim, a 25 year old Southampton woman, was on an auxiliary cycle traveling west on Middle Road around 1:15am when an unknown man on a motorcycle rode alongside her and demanded money. The culprit subsequently made good his escape with the victim’s wallet which contained personal items. The Southampton woman was uninjured. The suspect is described as a brown skinned male, approximately 5’7” tall with a round face and facial hair, believed to be in his 30s. He was wearing dark coloured clothing which included a hooded top and a black helmet with a visor. Inquiries into both incidents are underway. Injury RTC

Around 6pm on Monday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Burnt House Hill and Middle Road in Warwick. It appears that a rental cycle was traveling south on Burnt House Hill and came to a stop at the junction. The rider, a 48 year old Pennsylvania man, then attempted to make a right turn on to Middle Road, lost control and fell to the ground. The rider sustained abrasions to his left leg while the pillion passenger, a 15 year old young woman from Pennsylvania, also sustained abrasions to her left leg. The visitors’ cycle was not damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Burglary

Around 4pm on Monday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Tankard Lane, Sandys parish residence. On arrival officers spoke with the complainants who stated that sometime between 9:30am and 4pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into their home while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a quantity of cash and jewelry. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
