Tue, 2009-07-14

Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels, Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service would like to provide an update regarding the status of the Police investigation into the murder of 23 year old Shakeya Deroza, which occurred shortly before 3pm on Friday 10th July 2009. On behalf of the Bermuda Police Service I wish to extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of Shakeya Deroza.

The investigation is currently being headed by me (Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels) of the Serious Crime Unit and I am being assisted by two deputies, Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Mouchette and Detective Inspector Jerome Laws, along with a team of detectives.

As previously reported, shortly before 3pm on Friday 10th July 2009, Police officers responded to reports of a woman lying motionless in the street on Middle Road, Sandy’s, near the junction with Overplus Lane. First aid was provided but unfortunately Miss Deroza lost her fight for life as a result of receiving extensive injuries in what police believe was a violent confrontation.

An autopsy examination has been performed on Miss Deroza by a forensic pathologist currently on island and he confirms that she died as a result of receiving a number of wounds to her body.

The Bermuda Police Service acquired the assistance of a blood spatter expert who after examining the various crime scenes was able to make a number of interpretations.

A 36 year old male is currently in Police custody and investigators anticipate that he will be appearing before the courts in the coming days.

A number of crucial statements have already been recorded and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all of those people who have thus far come forward and assisted Police in their pursuit of obtaining the evidence and information required to advance this murder investigation.

However; Police continue to make a specific appeal for anyone who may have been in the area of the Railway Trail which runs between Overplus Lane and Somerset Bridge Post Office, during the period 1:30pm – 3:30pm on Friday 10th July to contact investigators at telephone 299-8115 or the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-623-8477.
