The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, May 18th – Monday, May 25th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 23
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 36
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 6
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 10
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Smith’s parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 3, Warwick = 1 and Sandy’s parish = 1.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 10 vehicles reported stolen, 3 were subsequently recovered, including the car.

Weekend Activity

Over the Bermuda Day holiday weekend (from 7am Friday, May 22nd – 7am Tuesday, May 26th) there were 5 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and 6 reported burglaries. There were also 16 reported damage only road traffic collisions, 10 reported road traffic collisions resulting in injury and 7 vehicles reported taken without their owners’ consent. In addition there were 6 reported disturbances, 7 reported assaults, 12 reported domestic related disputes, 19 reports of loud music and 1 reported robbery.

Recovered Jewelry

Over the last couple of months there have been several reported burglaries in the St. David’s and St. George’s areas; in particular during the months of February and May. Officers with the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit have arrested a man in connection with these burglaries and recovered a quantity of jewelry as a result. The St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit is appealing for any residents that live in the St. David’s and St. George’s communities that have been the victim of a burglary recently to contact them at 278-5105 or Detective Sergeant Jason Smith at 515-0864 in order to identify the jewelry seized.

Injury RTC

At 1:55pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Berry Hill Road in Paget involving a motorcycle and an auxiliary cycle. It appears that the auxiliary cycle was traveling east on Berry Hill Road in front of the motorcycle when the vehicles collided. The rider of the auxiliary cycle, a 16 year old Smith’s parish woman, was not injured; however the rider of the motorcycle, a 24 year old Warwick man, sustained a fractured right leg. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. Both cycles were moderately damaged Inquiries into this incident are underway.

At 1:!5pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Smith’s parish near Terceira’s Service Station involving a car and a Police motorcycle. It appears that the Police motor cycle was traveling west on North Shore Road and the car was attempting to enter Terceira’s Service Station when the collision occurred. The Police officer riding the motorcycle was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of minor injuries and released. The driver of the car, a 47 year old Devonshire man, was not injured. Both vehicles were moderately damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Missing Person - Mehdi David Yahi

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 30 year old Mehdi David Yahi. Mr. Yahi, a French national visiting the island is described as a white male, approximately 5’7” tall of slim build, clean shaven with black hair. He apparently arrived in Bermuda on Sunday, January 25th 2009 via British Airways. It appears that Mr. Yahi was traveling alone and was last seen around 8pm on Saturday, January 31st at the Fairmont Southampton Resort where he apparently attended the Heather Nova concert. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Mehdi David Yahi is encouraged to contact the main Police number, 295-0011.
