April 21 - Weekly Review

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, April 13th – Monday, April 20th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 12
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 23
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 3
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 19
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 4, Pembroke = 11, Paget = 1, Southampton = 1 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 19 vehicles reported stolen, 4 were subsequently recovered, including the car.

Missing Person - St. Claire McDonald Augustus

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 55 year old St. Claire McDonald Augustus (pictured right). Mr. Augustus, who is of no fixed abode, was last seen on Thursday, February 26th 2009 at Friswells Hill in Devonshire . He is known to frequent the Salvation Army on North Street in Pembroke and was also sleeping in a container in that area. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of 55 year old St. Claire McDonald Augustus is encouraged to contact the Child Victims Unit on 295-0011.

We have reason to be concerned for his well-being and would like to locate Mr. Augustus as a matter of urgency.

Missing Person - Mehdi David Yahi

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 30 year old Mehdi David Yahi (pictured left). Mr. Yahi, a French national visiting the island is described as a white male, approximately 5’7” tall of slim build, clean shaven with black hair. He apparently arrived in Bermuda on Sunday, January 25th 2009 via British Airways. It appears that Mr. Yahi was traveling alone and was last seen around 8pm on Saturday, January 31st at the Fairmont Southampton Resort where he apparently attended the Heather Nova concert. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Mehdi David Yahi is encouraged to contact the main Police number, 295-0011.

Witness Appeal - Fatal RTC

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1:30am Sunday, April 5th on South Road in Warwick near the junction with Dunscombe Road that claimed the life of Winston Burrows. Police are interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone who came upon the incident and may have assisted in any way. In particular, we are seeking the male driver of a taxi who provided a fire extinguisher from his vehicle to assist in putting out the flames. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Sergeant Derricka Brangman at the Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.

Marine Advisory

The Marine Police would like to remind the boating public that all boats, including punts and kayaks as well as moorings are required to be registered with the Department of Marine and Ports by 1st April each year. The decals that the Department of Marine and Ports have issued are bright pink in colour this year and need to be affixed to the front right side (starboard) of all boats, next to the Marine and Ports registration number. In addition, mooring registration decals must be attached to each mooring buoy.

Injury RTC

Around 7:40am on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Middle Road and St. Mary’s Road in Warwick involving a mini-bus and a motorcycle. It appears that the mini-bus was traveling south on St. Mary’s Road and the motorcycle was traveling east on Middle Road when the vehicles collided. The rider of the motorcycle, a 28 year old Pembroke man, sustained abrasions to his hands. He declined medical attention. The driver of the mini-bus, a 58 year old Southampton man, was not injured. The motorcycle was extensively damaged while the mini-bus received moderate front end damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Burglary

At 6:30pm on Monday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Judkin Lane, Hamilton parish residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 8:40am and 6pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into her home while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a black Toshiba laptop computer, a Samsung digital camera and a quantity of jewelry. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
