Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, March 2nd – Monday, March 9th 2009 there were:

* Reported Injury Collisions = 14
* Reported Damage Only Collisions = 31
* Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 7
* Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 21
* Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 9, Paget = 2, Warwick = 2 , Southampton = 1 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 21 vehicles reported stolen 5 were subsequently recovered.
Fatal RTC

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 29 year old Kevin Mooney of Southampton. Around 12:50am on Tuesday, Police received a report of a serious single vehicle road traffic collision on Middle Road in Warwick near the junction with Longford Road. It appears that Mr. Mooney was riding a motorcycle traveling west on Middle Road when he lost control, collided with the sidewalk and fell off the cycle. The 29 year old Southampton man was rushed to KEMH with serious head injuries and subsequently succumbed to those injuries. The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to former Chief Inspector Charles Mooney, his family & the friends of Kevin Mooney on his untimely passing.

The death of Kevin Mooney marks the 2nd fatal road traffic collision of 2009.
Burglary
Around 8:30am on Monday, Police received a report of a burglary at an Ord Road, Paget residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 2pm on Sunday and 8am on Monday, an unknown culprit gained entry into her apartment while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a quantity of jewelry, a Nintendo Wii video game system and a Wii Fit. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
