Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, February 9th – Monday, February 16th 2009 there were:

* Reported Injury Collisions = 8
* Reported Damage Only Collisions = 46
* Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 8
* Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 24
* Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 13, Warwick = 4 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 24 vehicles reported stolen 3 were subsequently recovered.
Robbery

Around 11:20pm on Monday, Police received a report of a robbery at a Mission Road, Paget residence. It appears that the victim, a 28 year old Paget woman, arrived at her home on her auxiliary cycle when she was approached by an unknown man in the driveway. A struggle ensued between the suspect and the Paget resident; with the suspect eventually managing to make good his escape with her Peugeot auxiliary cycle, license #397 AK, as well as a cream coloured ladies bag containing a quantity of cash, a gold BlackBerry Pearl cellular phone and personal items. The victim was not injured. The suspect is described as a black male of medium build wearing a dark coloured coat and dark coloured jeans with a white design on the right side. Inquiries are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
Handbag Snatch
Around 7:45pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch at the junction of Wesley Street and Park Road in Pembroke (in the vicinity of Bulls Head car park). It appears that the victim, a 32 year old Southampton woman was walking to her car which was parked at Bulls Head car park, when an unknown man approached her and grabbed her handbag. A struggle ensued; however the suspect managed to make good his escape with the bag on a dark coloured motorcycle traveling along Park Road, heading towards Dundonald Street. The brown handbag contained a black Nokia cellular phone, a black BlackBerry Pearl cellular phone, a white I-Pod, a quantity of cash and personal items. The victim was not injured. The suspect is described as a dark skinned male, approximately 5’5” tall of medium build wearing a dark coloured coat & a dark coloured helmet with a visor. Inquiries are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
