April 7 - Weekly Review

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, March 30th – Monday, April 6th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 14
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 43
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 5
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 16
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 1, Devonshire = 1, Pembroke = 7, Paget = 2, Warwick = 2 and Southampton = 2.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 3 cars also reported stolen during the period. Of the 16 vehicles reported stolen, 4 were subsequently recovered, including all 3 cars.

Missing Person - St. Claire McDonald Augustus

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 55 year old St. Claire McDonald Augustus (pictured right). Mr. Augustus, who is of no fixed abode, was last seen on Thursday, February 26th 2009 at Friswells Hill in Devonshire . He is known to frequent the Salvation Army on North Street in Pembroke and was also sleeping in a container in that area. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of 55 year old St. Claire McDonald Augustus is encouraged to contact the Child Victims Unit on 295-0011.

We have reason to be concerned for his well-being and would like to locate Mr. Augustus as a matter of urgency.

Missing Juvenile - Travis Malcolm Lowe

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 16 year old Travis Malcolm Lowe (pictured left). The teenager is described as light skinned, 5’3” tall weighing 110 pounds with black hair. He is known to frequent the Happy Valley Road Pembroke area and was reported missing on Thursday, February 26th 2009. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Travis Malcolm Lowe is encouraged to contact the Child Victims Unit on 295-0011.

Witness Appeal - Fatal RTC

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1:30am Sunday, April 5th on South Road in Warwick near the junction with Dunscombe Road involving a car and a truck. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Sergeant Derricka Brangman at the Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.

Missing Person - Mehdi David Yahi

The Bermuda Police Service is continuing to appeal for the public’s assistance in locating 30 year old Mehdi David Yahi (pictured right). Mr. Yahi, a French national visiting the island is described as a white male, approximately 5’7” tall of slim build, clean shaven with black hair. He apparently arrived in Bermuda on Sunday, January 25th 2009 via British Airways. It appears that Mr. Yahi was traveling alone and was last seen around 8pm on Saturday, January 31st at the Fairmont Southampton Resort where he apparently attended the Heather Nova concert. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Mehdi David Yahi is encouraged to contact the main Police number, 295-0011.

Advisory - Theft of Flat Screen TVs

The Bermuda Police Service has noticed a recent increase in the theft of flat screen TVs from residences. Police are reminding the public to lock & secure their homes at all times when leaving the premises unattended, even for a short period of time. Also, the serial numbers of flat screen TVs and other electronic equipment should be written down and kept in a separate, secure place. Another option is to obtain a U-Mark pen from any Police station which can be used to mark property so in the event it is lost or stolen and later recovered, it can be returned to its rightful owner. Finally, members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or individuals in their neighbourhood to Police on 295-0011.

Adviosry - Police Motorcycle Course

The Bermuda Police Service would like the motoring public to be aware that the Driver Training Unit will be conducting a Police Motorcycle Training Course for the next two weeks (the course started on Monday, April 6th). As usual the riders will be highly visible with the use of reflective vests or jackets.

There will be no speeds in excess of 50kph for the first 3 days; however after that, the riders at times will be training at excessive speeds with or without the use of emergency equipment. Therefore we are asking the motoring public to be vigilant if they are traveling in the same area as the trainee riders. The Bermuda Police Service thanks the motoring public in advance for their co-operation.

Assault

At 9:10am on Monday, Police received a report of an assault on a bus. It appears that the bus driver, a 45 year old Devonshire man, asked a male passenger who was wearing a hooded top with the hood over his head to remove the hood from his head while on the bus. A dispute then took place between the bus driver and the suspect, with the suspect using an onboard fire extinguisher to spray the bus driver before making good his escape. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
