Fatal RTC - Around 1:30am on Sunday, Police attended a fatal road traffic collision on South Road in Warwick near the junction with Dunscombe Road involving a truck and a car. Details remain unclear; however it appears that the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on South Road when they collided and that there were three people in the car and two people in the truck at the time. After the collision the car burst into flames. Two of the car’s occupants were initially treated at KEMH for their injuries; the male passenger was later released while the other passenger, a 29 year old Warwick woman whose injuries are considered serious but not life threatening, has been flown overseas for further medical treatment. The third occupant, believed to be a 44 year old Pembroke man and driver of the car, was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver of the truck, believed to be a 24 year old Southampton man and his male passenger were subsequently arrested. Their injuries are unknown but not believed to be serious. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact Acting Inspector Kevin Christopher on 295-0011 or the Somerset Police Station on 234-1010. The area of South Road in Warwick from Warwick Lane to Dunscombe Road was closed to all traffic following the incident and re-opened to regular traffic flow at 12:30pm Sunday. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified.

This marks the 5th road traffic fatality for 2009.

Man Overboard

Around 7:30am on Sunday, Marine Police attended a report of a man overboard near Pearl Island. On arrival officers met with two members of the public who had pulled the 58 year old Pembroke man to safety onboard their vessel. It appears that the Pembroke man was in a punt when it capsized; however, when recovered he was wearing a life jacket. He was brought ashore and taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment (of possible hypothermia). He is currently resting comfortably in stable condition on a general ward. The Bermuda Police Service would like to commend the two men who came to the aid of the victim. Inquiries into this incident by the Marine Police are underway.
