Sun, 2007-06-03

Around 7:50pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported disturbance at Albouys Point in Pembroke after receiving reports of a man brandishing a machete at that location. On arrival officers observed a man fitting the description given, on a motorcycle leaving the area. One of the officers signaled for the man to stop; however the suspect, a 26 year old Pembroke man, rode the motorcycle into that officer before attempting to make good his escape by driving between the Police vehicle and another parked vehicle; resulting in a minor damage only collision. A struggle took place as the officers attempted to arrest the Pembroke man, with the suspect striking one officer in the face with his hands as he tried to avoid being restrained. The suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated, was eventually subdued, arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station. He was subsequently detained after taking and failing the alco-analyser test. The injured male officer was taken to KEMH for treatment of a small laceration to his face and an abrasion to his left leg and released. The machete was recovered at the location after information received from a member of the public. Inquiries are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
