Roads Policing Unit Statistics

Mon, 2008-05-05

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the islands roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, April 28th – Monday, May 5th 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 10
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 38
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 7
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners Consent = 17
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Hamilton parish = 1, Devonshire = 4, Pembroke = 7, Paget = 1, Warwick = 3 and Sandy s parish = 1.

The majority of the vehicles removed were auxiliary cycles/motorcycles, with 1 car also stolen during the period. Of the 17 vehicles reported stolen, 3 were subsequently recovered (including the car).

During recent weeks, it appears that burglars have targeted residences in the area of Scotts Hill Road / Wilson Place / Beach Road in Sandy s parish.

  • Common Targeted Goods: Cash, jewelry and electronic items (Laptop computers, cell phones, Nano I-Pods, digital cameras and an X-BOX).
  • Common Methods of Entry: Insecure window / door; forced / pried window / door.
Crime Prevention Advice for Women
It is worth noting that individuals who appear confident and assertive tend to discourage attackers.
  • NEVER count money on the street. Keep the actual cash you carry to a minimum and try to use cheques or credit cards when possible.
  • Know the contents of your purse, i.e. amount of money, denominations, drivers license and other ID, so that it can be easily identified if lost or stolen.
  • Avoid using bank ATM machines when alone or at night to withdraw large sums of cash. Be wary of strangers who may be standing close by.
  • NEVER leave your handbag unattended in a shopping cart, on a shop counter or on the floor by your feet.
  • Walk with a companion if at all possible. Generally attackers do not want to confront more than one person.
