Marine Advisory

As you know, May 24th is normally the launch of the boating season in Bermuda.

The Marine Police Unit would like to remind ALL boaters & Jet Ski operators of the marine laws within Bermuda. All vessels should now be displaying a lime green 2008 registration decal and registration number issued by the Department of Marine and Ports.

Operators of vessels should have the required safety gear onboard the vessel including 1 life jacket for each person onboard, sufficient rope and anchor. They should also ensure they have sufficient fuel for the journey and the vessel and motor are in good working order. The boating public is reminded of the 5 knots / no wake 100 meters from any shore rule, and to slow down when passing swimmers and moored vessels. In addition, it is an offence to operate a power craft whilst under the influence of alcohol and the boating public is strongly discouraged from doing so.

Boaters venturing offshore are encouraged to file a float plan with Bermuda Radio including the number of persons onboard, intended destination, vessel registration number and intended time of return. On return to their mooring they should inform Bermuda Radio of their safe return.

Boat owners are reminded NOT to leave valuables such as cash, marine electronics and fishing gear onboard their vessel whilst unattended at its mooring. Items which must be left onboard should have identifying marks; in the event something is stolen and later recovered, it can be identified.

The Marine Police Unit will be out on patrol over the holiday weekend and we wish the boating public a safe and happy holiday weekend on the water.
