Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 29th – Monday, October 6th 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 18
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 49
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 3
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 18
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Hamilton parish = 1, Smith’s parish = 1, Devonshire = 1, Pembroke = 7, Paget = 3, Warwick = 2, Southampton = 2 and Sandy’s parish = 1.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 3 cars also stolen during the period. Of the 18 vehicles reported stolen 2 were subsequently recovered; both were cars.

Handbag Snatch
Around 10:45pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch on Richmond Road in Pembroke. The victim, a 50 year old Pembroke woman, stated that around 10:30pm that day she was walking east on Richmond Road when an unknown man walking in the opposite direction grabbed her handbag, causing the Pembroke woman to fall to the ground. The suspect then made good his escape on foot with the bag, running east on Richmond Road. The victim sustained minor abrasions to her knees and right hand. The handbag contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The suspect is described as a male of slim build, very athletic, approximately 18 years old wearing a black helmet and a black coat. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
TWOC
At 9:35am on Sunday, Police received a report of a vehicle taken without its owner’s consent. The complainant stated that sometime between 11pm on Saturday and 9am on Sunday an unknown culprit removed his car, a blue Peugeot 306 license #38870, which was parked outside his Hillview Road, Warwick residence. Police are appealing for anyone with any information on the whereabouts of this blue Peugeot 306 car, license #38870, to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.
Police Week 2008
During the week of October 26th to November 1st, the Bermuda Police Service will celebrate ‘Police Week’ - a week long series of events commemorating the Bermuda Police Service’s 129 years of service to Bermuda and its continuing commitment to the local community.

Several of these events are community oriented, and we would like to cordially invite all members of the public as well as the island’s school students to take part in the following activities:

  • Police Displays - Tuesday, October 28th (12 noon – 5pm)

Displays by some of our specialist units will take place on Police field in Prospect (just below Police Headquarters).

  • Commissioner for a Day - Wednesday, October 29th

The Bermuda Police Service is inviting all primary and middle school students to write an essay (maximum of 100 words) outlining why they would like to be Commissioner of Police for a Day. The eight best essays will be chosen by a committee and the winners will have the opportunity to ‘shadow’ the eight highest ranking members of the Police Service as they go about their daily duties.

  • Beating the Retreat – Wednesday, October 29th (8:30pm)

The Beating of the Retreat will take place on Front Street in the City of Hamilton. The Commissioner of Police and various dignitaries will be on hand for the traditional display by the Bermuda Regiment Band & Corps of Drums.

  • Police Open House - Friday, October 31st (10am – 2pm)

All three Police stations (Hamilton, Somerset & Southside) will be open to the public.
