Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 15th – Monday, September 22nd 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 25
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 41
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 2
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 20
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 3, Hamilton parish = 2, Smith’s parish = 1, Devonshire = 3, Pembroke = 6, Paget = 1, Warwick = 3 and Sandy’s parish = 1.

 

All of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles. Of the 20 vehicles reported stolen 3 were subsequently recovered.

Injury RTC/Impaired Driving
Around 3:50 this morning, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on St. John’s Road in Pembroke near the junction with Cox’s Hill. It appears that a car was traveling north on St. John’s Road when the driver, an 18 year old Pembroke man, lost control and collided with a utility pole. Bermuda Fire Service personnel also attended the scene and had to cut the front seat passenger, a 17 year old Pembroke man, out of the vehicle. The driver was not injured; however, the front seat passenger sustained a broken left arm. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The car was extensively damaged and the utility pole was broken in half. BELCO personnel attended the scene to repair/replace the damaged pole. The driver of the car was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and detained at Hamilton Police Station, after failing the alco-analyser test. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Injury RTC
At 1:30pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Southampton near Heron Bay Primary School involving a truck and a rental cycle. It appears that the rental cycle was traveling east on Middle Road and the truck was traveling in the opposite direction when the female rider of the rental cycle lost control and the two vehicles collided. She sustained facial injuries, abrasions to her arms & legs and a possible fractured right leg. The rental cycle’s passenger, a 21 year old Pittsburgh man, sustained abrasions to his hands and legs. Both are visitors to the island and were taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the truck, a 52 year old Southampton man, was not injured. The rental cycle received front end damage while the truck was not damaged. Inquiries are underway.
