Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 1st – Monday, September 8th 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 20
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 37
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 5
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 22
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 3, Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 11, Paget = 1, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 1 and Sandy’s parish = 1.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also stolen during the period. Of the 22 vehicles reported stolen 5 were subsequently recovered, including the car.

Handbag Snatch
At 3:05pm on Monday, Police attended a reported handbag snatch outside Crystal Caves in Hamilton parish. On arrival officers spoke with the victim, a 73 year old woman from Pennsylvania, USA who is a visitor to the island. The Pennsylvania woman stated that she and her husband, a 74 year old Pennsylvania man, were walking from Crystal Caves towards Wilkinson Avenue. In doing so they passed an unknown man. A short time after passing the suspect, the victim was pushed to the ground and her handbag taken. The suspect ran towards Wilkinson Avenue with the victim’s husband giving chase. The suspect was then seen on the back of a motorcycle heading towards North Shore Road. Alerted by the 74 year old Pennsylvania man a passing motorist attempted to intercept the suspects, but they managed to elude that motorist. An off duty Police officer also pursued the suspects; however, they managed to make good their escape. The victim sustained injuries to both arms and her head. The suede handbag contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The main suspect (pillion passenger) is described as a black male, over 6’ tall dressed in a white shirt with a symbol on the front and dark coloured pants. Both men were traveling on a black Honda Scoopy motorcycle. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.

Around 12:25pm on Monday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch at King’s Square in St. George’s. The victim, a 67 year old woman who is a visitor from the UK, stated that around 11:50am that day she and her friend, a 64 year old woman who is also visiting from the UK, were in the area of the ferry terminal when an unknown man on a motorcycle rode up to the 67 year old woman and grabbed her handbag. A struggle ensued during which the suspect used a bladed article to cut the handbag’s strap and then made good his escape with the bag. The victim was not injured. The white crochet handbag contained a quantity of cash and personal items. The suspect is described as a black male of slim build, wearing a black T-shirt, dark coloured shorts, tan boots and a black full face helmet. He was riding a black & silver motorcycle and is believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Injury RTC
At 5:40pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Smith’s parish near Twins Variety, involving a motorcycle and a Police vehicle. It appears that a truck towing a trailer was traveling west on Middle Road, with the motorcycle traveling behind the truck. The Police car was traveling in the opposite direction behind a car. It appears that the truck was attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway when the rider of the cycle, a 42 year old Devonshire man, attempted to overtake the truck and collided with the Police vehicle. The Devonshire man sustained a broken left leg and abrasions. The driver of the Police vehicle was not injured. The cycle was extensively damaged while the Police car received moderate front end damage. Inquiries are underway.

Around 4:55pm on Monday, Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Pembroke, near the junction with West Park Lane. It appears that a car was traveling west on North Shore Road when the driver, a 21 year old Pembroke woman, lost control and collided with a utility pole. The Pembroke woman sustained injuries to her shoulder, chest, hip and stomach. The car was extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Around 2:40pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Maritime Lane in Sandy ’s parish involving a bus and an ‘amusement train.’ It appears that both vehicles were traveling south on Maritime Lane when the ‘amusement train’ stopped and the bus attempted to overtake it. As a result the vehicles collided and one of the bus’s windows was damaged. The bus was full of passengers at the time; however, only three received minor injuries. They were treated by EMTs at the scene and then continued to their destination. The driver of the bus was not injured, nor was the driver of the ‘amusement train’, which apparently was not damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Sudden Death of Raymond Curtis
A 25 year old Sandy’s parish man and 19 year old Sandy’s parish woman appeared in court this morning regarding the sudden death of 22 year old Raymond Curtis. The investigation into the death of Raymond Curtis is ongoing and Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information about this incident to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
