Jet Ski Inicident in Waters Off Somerset [Updated]

Around 2:10pm Thursday, August 22nd police and fellow first responders were dispatched to a Jet Ski incident in waters off Somerset.

Details are limited at this time.

However, early information indicates that a female visitor who was apparently a passenger on a Jet Ski fell off and became unresponsive during a tour.

She was immediately brought to shore and rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance.

Further information will be provided when more details are available.

Update: Sadly, despite lifesaving efforts the female visitor – said to be a 62 year old American woman – has been pronounced dead at the hospital.

No further information regarding the deceased will be provided at this time, until next of kin has been notified.

Inquiries continue regarding the circumstances of this incident.

Update: Friday, August 23rd - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 68 year old Kathleen Emam, who was visiting Bermuda with her husband onboard the cruise ship Norwegian Escape and extends sincere condolences to Mr. Emam, their family and friends.

Mrs. Emam, from New York U.S.A. was initially said to be 62 years old.

Around 2:10pm Thursday, August 22nd Mrs. Emam was on a Jet Ski operated by her 75 year old husband, who is also from New York, when she fell off the back of the Jet Ski and became unresponsive during a tour in the waters off Daniel’s Head, Sandys parish.

Despite lifesaving efforts as she was transported by boat to Mangrove Bay public dock, which were then continued by Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service personnel at the dock and ambulance personnel as she was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mrs. Emam was later pronounced dead.

A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist the deceased’s family at this difficult time.

There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a cause of death is being examined.
