Update - Fatal Shooting in Somerset

As a result of the shooting death of the 29 year old Warwick man that took place today, a full investigation has commenced by the Serious Crime Unit of the Bermuda Police Service and there has been some information that has come to light. Police have received information of persons circulating a picture of the deceased at the scene in a blood drenched shirt.

Around 2pm on Friday, Police responded to a confirmed firearm incident in the area of Somerset Road and East Shore Road in Sandys parish. A 29 year old Warwick man was shot and subsequently died as a result of his injuries. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified. An active investigation into this incident is underway. The area has been cordoned off and traffic delays are anticipated in the area of Somerset Post Office & Somerset Country Squire until further notice.
Bermuda Police Service Acquires Pre-Owned BMW Police Car

The Bermuda Police Service is pleased to announce that we have taken advantage of an opportunity to buy four pre-owned 
police vehicles from the United Kingdom. The Service has taken delivery of one BMW motorcar; a second BMW and two Audi cars are expected to arrive later this month or early February. [Click on the photo to enlarge].
Police Negotiators Talk Man Off Roof

Police and other first responders attended an incident at Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute a few minutes after 5 on Saturday evening. It appears that a patient made his way onto the roof and was threatening to do harm to himself. As a result police negotiators were called to the scene and began a very detailed process of talking with the patient. As a result the man was brought off the roof and inside without injury to himself or anyone else.
Court Appearance for Alleged Armed Burglar

17 year old Leo Burgess of Sandys parish appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 24th 2011 to face charges of aggravated burglary and possession or handling of a firearm with persons not before the court regarding an armed burglary that occurred at a Southampton residence on Monday, December 6th 2010. The charges are indictable and must be heard in the Supreme Court; therefore Mr. Burgess was not required to plea. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to reappear before the court on Monday, February 7th 2011.
2010 Year End Crime Statistics

In 2010 there were 7 people killed and 29 people injured though the use of firearms. This represents a significant increase 
over 2009 which recorded 4 and 13 respectively. Across all other areas, crime is at its lowest point in the last decade. Significant resources and several strategies were deployed in 2010 to target gun, gang and drug offences as the primary objectives for the police and the community.
Vessels Intercepted, Suspected Drugs Seized & Arrests Made

Police officers have intercepted two vessels this morning during a marine operation, one being the Carefree IV. As a result five individuals have been arrested, including the two man crew of the Carefree IV and a significant quantity of suspected drugs has been seized. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Recruit Foundation Course #73 Charity Fundraiser

The student officers of Recruit Foundation Course #73 will be conducting two charity car washes on Saturday 22nd January and Saturday 29th January 2011 respectively.
On Saturday, 22nd January a car wash will be held at the Paget Shell Service Station located at the junction of Middle Road & Valley Road in Paget, between 9am and 2pm.
On Saturday, 29th January a car wash will be held at the Crawl Hill Esso Service Station located at the junction of North Shore Road & Radnor Road in Hamilton parish, between 9am and 2pm.
Sudden Death of the Deputy Governor’s Wife

Around 8:40pm on Wednesday, January 19th 2011 Police attended a report of a sudden death at a Devonshire residence. The deceased has been identified as 42 year old Melissa Arkley, wife of Deputy Governor David Arkley. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. An autopsy will be performed in due course.
Imprisonment & Substantial Fine for Violently Resisting Arrest, Drug Offences

24 year old Kenneth Tucker-Thompson appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 17th 2011 and pled guilty to four charges.
- Violently Resisting Arrest.
- Possession of Cannabis in an increased penalty zone.
- Possession of Cannabis Resin with intent to supply in an increased penalty zone.
- Possession of Ecstasy (MDMA) with intent to supply.
