Sun, 2005-08-14

Around 10:35pm on Sunday, Police (two units consisting of two Police officers each) attended a reported domestic dispute at a Sound View Road, Sandy’s parish residence. On arrival, two of the officers spoke with the complainant, a 39 year old Sandy’s parish woman, inside the residence while the other two officers stayed outside. The complainant stated that prior to the officers’ arrival the suspect, a 47 year old Sandy’s parish man, had caused damage inside the apartment during the domestic dispute and then left. The officers observed damage to a TV and a mirror. As the officers in the residence were finishing their conversation with the complainant, a commotion was heard outside. The suspect had returned to the residence brandishing a machete, shouting for Police to leave his property. The suspect then ran towards the entrance of the apartment, attacking an officer with the machete. The officer attempted to avoid the attack but fell and was struck in the head with the machete and received multiple blows to the abdomen. The suspect also confronted two other officers with the machete before making good his escape on foot as more Police units arrived on the scene to assist. The injured officer was rushed to KEMH where he was treated for a 5”- 6” laceration to the top of his head, two superficial cuts to his shoulders and other soft tissue injuries. He remains on a general ward in stable condition. Police launched an intensive search of the area for the suspect, who eventually turned himself in at the Somerset Police Station where he was arrested. A full investigation into this incident is underway by the Serious Crime Unit.

The Commissioner of Police stated: “Once again, one of our officer’s personal safety has been seriously threatened in the lawful execution of his duty. The courage that our officers continue to show is commendable. The spontaneous and explosive nature of this incident hammers home just how rapidly violence can escalate and I sincerely appreciate, as the rest of Bermuda should, the hard work of the Police officers as they carry out their responsibilities under difficult circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer as we wish him a full and complete recovery.”
