Robbery - Police responded to a report of a robbery that took place a few minutes after 2am on Saturday, January 1st 2011. It appears that a 50 year old Sandys man was returning from a function and he was arriving back at his dwelling on Broome Street in Sandys. As he was exiting his car, two men came out of the bushes and attacked him. The victim states that one of the men brandished what is believed to be a firearm and made demands of money. The man was then hit in the face and then the two men proceeded to drag him 75 yards in front of Sandys Middle School/Sandys 360 where there was a New Year’s function going on. He managed to break free and went inside the building where someone called the ambulance. He was conveyed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he received treatment for lacerations and swelling to his lips. The man stated nothing was stolen from him. An active investigation into this incident is ongoing. Police would be interested in speaking with anyone that was in the Sandys 360 area at the time and may have witnessed or may have any information on this incident to contact police on 295-0011, or the independent Crime Stoppers Bermuda number 800-8477.

Meantime, at approximately 12:30am on Sunday, January 2nd police attended a business on Devil’s Hole Hill in Smith's parish. Upon police arrival it was ascertained that a suspect entered the store with what appeared to be a handgun and made demands of money. It is unclear whether or not he made off with anything but no one was injured. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

New Year’s Activity

Overall, this New Year’s weekend ended with very few incidents of note. It can be classified as a relatively routine New Year’s weekend especially when compared to past New Year's weekends, with police having to monitor private parties and liquor licensed premises. It should be noted that some arrests were made for infractions such as minor drug possession, affray, domestic disputes and drink driving. In fact, 11 people were arrested over the weekend for driving whilst impaired and police issued 47 stop and search forms.

There was a large police presence from east to west with officers from all units being called upon to police over the New Year’s period. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their support and cooperation; we recognize we could not achieve any of our weekend success without the support of the community.
