Causeway Bridge Remains Closed

Thu, 2010-02-11

From the Government Department of Communication & Information (DCI) - The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) is advising the public that based on the latest weather update from the Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) the Causeway Bridge will remain closed until 8.00 p.m.

This is due to the fact that winds in the area continue to be extremely high. There have been sustained wind speeds of 45-55 knots and it is expected that there will be hurricane force gusts over the next several hours.

There was an assessment of the bridge at 2.30 p.m., however while the integrity of the bridge is sound, high winds and weather in the vicinity continue to be severe.

Today the Director of the BWS, Dr. Mark Guishard said, “These lingering storm-force winds are likely to continue for as long as another four hours. As such, we have extended the Storm warning until this evening, and will continue to closely monitor this evolving situation."

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the EMO and Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing Sen. the Hon. Lt. Col. David Burch, took this opportunity to thank the public for their cooperation and patience, particularly those who are affected by the bridge closure. And Minister Burch continues to encourage all motorists to exercise caution when moving about the Island throughout the afternoon and evening.
