Press Conference Regarding Recent Robberies [Updated]

Tue, 2018-08-21

Commissioner of Police Mr. Stephen M. Corbishley – Good afternoon gentlemen.

The purpose is to make an appeal to the public around a concerning crime trend we’ve seen develop over the past couple of weeks.

So far we’ve had nine robberies involving motorcycles normally involving two males described as black males on mopeds committing nine offences.

And one today just after one o’clock in the Frog Lane area of Pembroke where a gentlemen had his bracelet stolen.

Obviously from the police perspective we’re actively pursuing the investigations and there some forensic opportunities and intelligence to identify those involved – but I encourage members of the local community if they have any information to contact us as soon as possible with anybody they may have suspicions of, or any that they know are actually involved in these crimes.

They can contact Detective Inspector Colin King on 247-1252 or alternatively if they’re concerned in regards to their confidentiality I do encourage them strongly to contact Crime Stoppers on 800-8477.

I also would like to make an appeal for people to consider their safety. These are nine incidents and obviously we are investigating them, so I don’t want to cause people any alarm or distress – but people should be aware of their surroundings.

If there are males acting suspiciously on mopeds nearby, just be cautious around their personal property and if really concerned contact us directly at the Bermuda Police Service.

Additionally, if people see mopeds that are hidden away that again cause suspicion, please contact immediately.

I have absolutely no doubt that someone in the local community knowns who these individuals are, and I encourage them strongly to make contact with us – particularly if they can do that confidentially.

I am also confident that we are going to identify those responsible and bring them to justice, but what we do need is local communities to help us with that information and also for us to assure them and give them advice in regards to their personal safety.

Update: Wednesday, August 22nd

Commissioner of Police Mr. Stephen M. Corbishley – Thank you ladies and gentlemen. An update since my briefing yesterday.

I’m pleased to report to you that in the past 24 hours six persons have been arrested and are now in the custody of the Bermuda Police Service.

We believe that they are involved in the robberies that I touched upon yesterday, particularly the one at Somerset Bridge and also the one at Frog Lane.

We’ve also recovered stolen property that we believe was taken in those robberies, and also a stolen motorcycle.

The investigation will progress over the next 24 hours, where we will seek the opportunity to identify and secure evidence and where possible, bring those responsible to justice.

I am extremely grateful to the assistance and attention of the local community and also the media for reporting on this matter.

I think this is an excellent example of how the police should be working, bringing together intelligence and the assets that we have and the information that members of the public can present to us.

I wish to be quite clear that these kinds of offences are extremely violent and will not be tolerated and this is an example of the speed that we will respond and the way in which we will use intelligence – and those committing these crimes or whether considering committing these crimes should be fully aware that the full weight of the law will come down on them and we will identify every single opportunity to arrest and bring them to justice.
