Department of Corrections Crowned King of the Grill at Charity Event

Thu, 2017-09-07

Constable Kimberley Spring – On Saturday 2nd September 2017, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) hosted the first ever Inter-Service BBQ Challenge, titled “King of the Grill,” at the Police Recreation Club in Prospect.

Six government agencies took part in the historic challenge which was attended by over 300 guests, including H.E. the Governor Mr. John Rankin and U.S. Consul General Mrs. Mary Ellen Koenig.

The head judge was Chef Peter Jovetic of Food 4 Thought Catering, and guest judges were Mrs. Pam Quarterly of Rosa’s, and Superintendent James Howard of the BPS.

Special thanks to our host MC, Mr. Wendell Dill who commentated the event with good humour.

The participants were: the Department of Corrections (“no name”), the Royal Bermuda Regiment (Grillin’ Drillers), Bermuda Hospitals Board (Sizzling Smokehouse BBQ), Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service (Up in Smoke), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Stop List) and the Bermuda Police Service (Blazing Blues).

Each team prepared beef ribs, pork ribs and chicken legs on the BBQ, in the presence of a live audience. They were judged on taste, seasoning techniques, presentation and cleanliness. The teams presented their dishes to the judges and explained their creations in detail.

Lots of friendly banter accompanied the cook-off, with each team believing they would be crowned “King.”

The Bermuda Hospitals Board earned the award for best dressed team. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service earned the award for best team name.

Judges awarded third place to the Bermuda Hospitals Board who were closely behind first runner up, USCBP. The Department of Corrections team was ultimately crowned “Kings of the Grill” after impressing the judges with their culinary skills.

The hot wing eating challenge was won by Shannon Trott, who was awarded a $100 gift voucher from the wing challenge sponsor, Rosa's Restaurant.

During the night, guests were able to enjoy Crown & Anchor and Plinko tables (with fake money of course), before over 30 prizes were raffled off.

A job well done to all the teams – your performances behind the grill were first class.

We would also like to thank our corporate community partners, BGA Group of Companies, Dunkley’s Dairy, Gorham’s Ltd, the Market Place, Lindo’s Family Food, Belmont Hills and Rosa’s for their sponsorship of this event.

All proceeds earned during the challenge will be shared between Special Olympics Bermuda and The Family Centre.

Look forward to the 2018 BBQ challenge, coming soon to a grill near you!
