Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, February 9th – Monday, February 16th 2009 there were:

* Reported Injury Collisions = 8
* Reported Damage Only Collisions = 46
* Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 8
* Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 24
* Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 2, Devonshire = 2, Pembroke = 13, Warwick = 4 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

Injury RTC/Impaired Driving- Around 3:40am on Sunday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Somerset Road in Sandy’s parish near the junction with the Railway Trail (Somerset Bridge area) involving a car and an auxiliary cycle. It appears that the car was traveling east on Somerset Road and the auxiliary cycle was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided.

Around 3:40am on Sunday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Somerset Road in Sandy’s parish near the junction with the Railway Trail (Somerset Bridge area) involving a car and an auxiliary cycle. It appears that the car was traveling east on Somerset Road and the auxiliary cycle was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The rider of the cycle, a 17 year old Warwick woman sustained cuts & abrasions to her legs and feet. The driver of the car, a 54 year old Sandy’s parish woman, was not injured. Both vehicles received moderate front end damage. The 17 year old Warwick woman was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Feb 15 - Weekend Report

Robbery- At 10:10pm on Saturday, Police received a report of a robbery at a Rose Hill Road, Southampton residence. The victims, a 66 year old Southampton man and his wife, a 66 year old Southampton woman, stated that at 9:50pm they arrived home and parked their car in the driveway. At that time, an unknown man approached the car brandishing a weapon and demanding money.

At 10:10pm on Saturday, Police received a report of a robbery at a Rose Hill Road, Southampton residence. The victims, a 66 year old Southampton man and his wife, a 66 year old Southampton woman, stated that at 9:50pm they arrived home and parked their car in the driveway. At that time, an unknown man approached the car brandishing a weapon and demanding money. The Southampton man did not give in to the suspect’s demands and was punched in the face, sustaining a laceration. The assailant then grabbed a black bag containing a DVD and personal items from the back seat before making good his escape. The victim declined medical treatment. His wife was not injured.

Injury RTC-Around 9:35pm on Thursday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Ord Road in Warwick near the junction with Banana Lane. It appears that a car was traveling east on Ord Road when the driver, an 18 year old Warwick man, lost control and collided with a parked car. The Warwick man and his male front seat passenger sustained head contusions.

Around 9:35pm on Thursday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Ord Road in Warwick near the junction with Banana Lane. It appears that a car was traveling east on Ord Road when the driver, an 18 year old Warwick man, lost control and collided with a parked car. The Warwick man and his male front seat passenger sustained head contusions. The eastbound car received extensive front end damage while the parked car received extensive rear end damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
