Commissioner Addresses Arrest of Keishon Smith

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva – Due to a series of misrepresentations being reported in the media regarding the arrest of Mr. Keishon Smith, I wish to provide clarity on what actually happened. Mr. Smith was arrested by police on the evening of 30th September on an Apprehension Warrant.

Witness Appeal: Confirmed Firearm Incident on Parsons Road - All three men arrested in connection with the confirmed firearm incident on Parsons Road in Pembroke that occurred around 10:30am on Monday, October 4th have been released on Police bail while the Serious Crime Unit progresses its investigation into this brazen shooting. Forensic evidence is being processed and interviews with witnesses are still being conducted.

Allegations of Assault by Troy Smith Against Police Officer

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mike Jackman – After consideration of evidence by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, including the TASER DVD footage, photographs, statements from the attending officers as well as the alleged victim Mr. Troy Smith, the DPP has concluded that “there is insufficient evidence to justify criminal proceedings” against the accused officer.

It was alleged the assault took place during the early morning hours of Sunday, July 4th 2010 when officers attended a reported domestic incident at a Pembroke residence and had cause to arrest Mr. Smith.

Assault/Robbery - Around 11:55pm on Tuesday, Police received a report of an assault/robbery outside Maxi Mart on Middle Road in Sandys parish. It appears that the victim, a 56 year old mini-bus driver from Warwick, was about to get into his vehicle when he was accosted by two unknown men brandishing bladed articles. The assailants took a pouch containing a quantity of loose change from the Warwick man before fleeing on foot. The victim was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment; however his injury is not believed to be life threatening.

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

Confirmed Firearm Incident in Pembroke - Around 10:30am on Monday, Police responded to a confirmed firearm incident on Parsons Road in Pembroke. The victim, a 27 year old Pembroke man, was injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. An active investigation into this incident is underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
